Dear fellow mainframer,
Mainframes already run what matters most. Built on decades of engineering excellence and human expertise, they power the critical systems businesses rely on every day. As technology advances and business needs evolve, the next challenge is to master change while preserving the reliability, resilience, and trust these platforms have earned.
Mastering the mainframe will be the central theme of the Mighty Mainframe Conference 2027. And this is where things get exciting: right now, the conference is still taking shape. We are defining the agenda, exploring new ideas, and looking for bold topics and inspiring speakers who can help the community navigate the next era of mainframe innovation.
We had a pleasant surprise during a recent project. While tackling a complex CICS migration, our engineers discovered an unexpected solution right in our own workshop: Carbon.modernize.
Carbon.modernize for Sysprogs
Carbon.modernize usually gets called in when applications need modernizing. This time, we gave it a different job. 👀
Antonio Gibas and the team used Carbon.modernize methodology to help system engineers migrate CICS from z/VSE to z/OS. The result was a custom CSD dashboard that worked through tens of thousands of definitions, mapped dependencies, flagged migration issues and left the tricky decisions to the humans who know the system best.
AI was used only for AI-assisted development of the dashboard, while all CSD processing was performed on-premises.
Antonio wrote up the full story, including where automation delivered the biggest benefits and where it was smarter to stop and let people take over.

Help Shape Mighty Mainframe Conference 2027!
Mighty Mainframe will once again come to life alongside QED conference, but this time at the five-star Pical Resort in Poreč, Croatia, from 9 to 11 May 2027.

Mastering the mainframe will guide next year’s conference. It brings together the experience of people who understand these systems with the possibilities of AI, intelligent automation, and modern engineering practices. Human expertise provides context and judgment; new tools help teams put that knowledge to work in new ways. Mastery means making thoughtful decisions about what to change, how to change it, and how to ensure those changes lead to outcomes people can trust.
Human expertise. Intelligent automation. Trusted outcomes.
Join us in shaping the conference! If you have an experience worth sharing, a fresh perspective, or a bold idea that could help the community move forward, start gathering your thoughts. Our Call for Papers is coming soon!
Stay tuned. More details are on the way!

Industry insights
IBM officially unveiled its next-generation dual-architecture processor for future IBM Z and LinuxONE systems at the Hot Chips conference. What makes this announcement particularly significant is that it does not rely on emulation, hidden Arm processors, or application porting. Each core is designed to run both Arm and IBM Z instruction sets natively, opening up exciting new possibilities!
This is very big news for the mainframe platform and its ecosystem.
That said, several important details are still unknown. IBM has not yet announced availability dates, nor has it disclosed pricing or software licensing policies for the new dual-architecture platform.
There are already several excellent analyses covering the announcement. We’ve selected a few of the most informative ones below.
