Theme: Reinterpretation of Edo Murtić
The 10th edition of the Facade Gallery continues the collaboration between CROZ and HDLU, focusing on the reinterpretation of Edo Murtić‘s iconic artistic style. Murtić, one of the most significant figures in Croatian modernism, is renowned for his dynamic use of color and innovative approaches to abstract art.
His extensive body of work includes everything from gestural abstraction to graphic techniques, ceramics, mosaics, and murals.
This exhibition celebrates his legacy by inviting contemporary artists to reimagine his work in a modern context, maintaining the vibrancy and impact that Murtić’s art has had on both Croatian and regional culture.
Artist: Diana Trohar
Diana Trohar, a Croatian artist known for her distinctive style and artistic approach, was chosen to reinterpret the work of Murtić. Her artwork, which blends elements of Murtić’s expressive use of color with a contemporary sensibility, pays homage to Murtić’s legacy while introducing her unique perspective.
Trohar’s reinterpretation of Murtić’s work is an exploration of color, form, and abstract expression, reflecting Murtić’s dynamic gestures and the energy that he brought to his pieces. The final work, displayed on a large 12 x 4.80 m poster on the CROZ building facade, was created with a modern interpretation that connects Murtić’s historical influence with the current artistic climate.
Why Does It Matter?
Edo Murtić’s contribution to modern art in Croatia and the broader region cannot be overstated. As a leading figure of high modernism, his impact continues to resonate. By reinterpreting his work, Trohar not only honors Murtić’s artistic achievements but also underscores the ongoing relevance of his themes, particularly in a contemporary context. This exhibition connects past and present, celebrating the vitality of Croatian art while prompting a dialogue on the evolution of abstract expressionism.
Murtić’s artistic vision played a crucial role in shaping cultural life in the second half of the 20th century, and Trohar’s reinterpretation highlights how contemporary artists can draw inspiration from this iconic legacy to create work that speaks to the present.
