In focus: Getting started
“There are no junior DevOps engineers.”
While we totally appreciate the subtlety of this message, junior people have to start somewhere, right? Junior people, this one is for you: be sure to take a look at this multipart series by Igor Kantor. Although we wouldn’t agree 100% on his programming language selection (Python?! What..?! :), we absolutely love everything else he has written. If you’re interested in DevOps this will give you an excellent intro to what you can expect.
Before we dive deep into the subject, a word of caution: if you feel like other people speak some kind of strange DevOps-Cloud-Mandarin-Chinese, stop by our lexicon of basic DevOps and cloud-related terms and concepts. This wasn’t intended to be a comprehensive reference, but rather a gentle intro and just-enough-guide to get you going.
Full disclosure: we also feel that terms like “DevOps engineer” and “DevOps team” are in their nature oxymorons and lousy choice of words. DevOps is a culture, not a function. There should be no particular “DevOps engineer” simply because everybody should be practicing DevOps. Same goes for “DevOps team”. There should be no “DevOps team” because that would imply that other teams don’t do DevOps. What there should be is a “DevOps Community of Practice”, an orthogonal structure across all teams where people share their knowledge and experience. CoPs are the cornerstone of every learning organization. You want to have them.

+ Those of you who know us well know that we are OpenShift aficionados. Most of us made our first shaky steps right here at OpenShift Interactive Learning Portal. Here you can spin up your personal pre-configured OpenShift instance, access it from your browser and try out a number of canned lessons. And you don’t need i7 with 48 gigs of RAM to do that
+ Did you ever wonder how other organizations are embracing DevOps and how your organization stacks up against them? Take a look at extensive State of DevOps Report 2018. New round of survey is starting soon so you can even participate!

“The factory of the future will have only two employees, a man and a dog. The man will be there to feed the dog. The dog will be there to keep the man from touching the equipment”
