Howdy AI friends,
Welcome to AI à la Carte, the newsletter where we whip up innovative AI solutions that perfectly blend AI with the solid foundations of your existing infrastructure.
I’m Giulia, your editor for this BizTech adventure. As a data science and AI consultant, I specialize in developing customer solutions with NLPs and LLM models. Today I want to share some insights about setting an AI roadmap in synergy with the client to enhance their AI engineering journey. This is a core issue that touches both the technical and business perspectives of every AI project.
But first, let me introduce myself…
Being Italian, food is a big part of my life. It’s not just sustenance; it’s creative, fun, and brings people together. I used to cook fancy meals, but now, with a small child, my culinary feats involve finding that perfect balance between a dish everyone loves and one that’s quick to prepare. Just like food, AI engineering is everywhere, and the parallels between these two worlds offer a unique perspective on a common challenge: achieving excellence in the AI solutions with meticulous attention to detail, a delicate balance of ingredients or components, and the ability to innovate and adapt swiftly under pressure to deliver a flawless result.
This newsletter is inspired by my daily life: coding and developing algorithms for clients’ solutions, enjoying good food and being fascinated by AI solutions that bring good to our world. Speaking of Michelin stars, this issue dives into a funny parallel I’ve observed: the world of high-pressure kitchen artistry and the intense realm of AI solution architects.
Yes, you read that right! While on the surface, these two professions might seem as far apart as a perfectly roasted duck and a server rack, when it comes to delivering a flawless end product, both chefs and AI architects face remarkably similar challenges.
Let’s explore and see how the pressure cooker of a Michelin kitchen mirrors the high-stakes environment of deploying an AI model into production.
Dealing with Pressure: Expectations and Deadlines
In a professional kitchen, chefs are constantly under the gun. Customers expect perfection, and every dish must be executed flawlessly within tight timeframes. Similarly, AI solution architects face intense pressure to deliver cutting-edge solutions that meet business expectations and tight deadlines.
The most challenging issue both chefs and AI architects face is the relentless pressure to deliver perfection. Imagine a chef trying to create a complex soufflé under the watchful eye of a food critic, while the clock ticks away. That’s the life of an AI architect dealing with stakeholders expecting instant, magical results. Both need to manage stress, set realistic expectations, and maintain composure under pressure. And just like a soufflé can collapse with one wrong move, an AI project can fail with one misstep.
I have found that managing expectations at this stage is crucial for cultivating customer understanding of the meticulous craftsmanship involved in designing and implementing an AI solution. It goes beyond simply deploying a model; it entails addressing challenges such as data governance, system integration, model maintenance, compliance, security, and process automation. Drawing from these complexities, Damir Kopljar crafted an AI engineering roadmap. This is a cookbook that every enterprise AI architect should keep at hand.
However, some customers may have excellent knowledge in one of the areas but are still unsure of some crucial ones. This is the case of Datev, which had excellent data capabilities, but lacked expertise in the AI modeling field. Bringing back the parallel to the chef’s kitchen, our experience shows that the best approach is when the AI architect brings her tools and experience to the customer and cooks a solution together. It is ultimately an approach to enhance the customer’s AI engineering journey.
Ready for a dainty meal?
The toughest challenge both chefs and AI architects face is the relentless demand for perfection under pressure. So, when you enjoy a meticulously prepared meal, remember the AI solution architect working behind the scenes. Both crafts blend science and art, precision and creativity, driven by a passion for excellence.
In my next newsletter, I’ll explore the creativity in troubleshooting and AIOps, akin to a chef’s inventive approach to cooking. Just as culinary experts improvise to perfect a dish, AI engineers solve problems and optimize operations to ensure success.
Stay tuned!
