0800-DEVOPS #50 – Wrong Fit, Right Fit with Andre Martin

06. 08. 2023
Overview

Welcome to 0800-DEVOPS, a newsletter digest of interesting ideas from the world of DevOps, technical practices and increased productivity! I talked with Andre how looking for the right fit instead of labeling bad personal or corporate traits changes everything.

A newsletter that started as a personal learning and getting-in-touch project by Ivan Krnic grew into a sociotechnical newsletter covering topics of technical excellence, organizational improvements, and productivity.

The Fit

Me: Did we overdo this employer branding thing? On a scale from 1 to 10, where are we? 7 or 13?

Andre: We’re like 20!

Organizations are socio-technical systems. The human factor is crucial. People are productive when they are engaged and feel good in the organization.

Companies have long drawn an ideal picture of an ideal organization, pushing Employer Branding to its limits.

People were no better – drawing an ideal picture of an ideal employee, whatever that meant, even if it was very different from who they were. Come to think of it, it’s not about who you are, but about giving the “right” answers in the interview.

The real truth is that there’s no one ideal company profile, and there’s no one ideal talent profile. It’s not about being ideal because there is no one ideal profile. It’s about finding the right fit between the company and the talent.

Understanding that there are no good and bad companies and talents, but only right and wrong fits, is a game-changer in building relationships and running company HR.

But, don’t take it from me – listen to my conversation with Andre Martin.

Wrong Fit, Right Fit with Andre Martin

Wrong Fit, Right Fit with Andre Martin

Andre Martin has worked in senior roles in charge of learning dynamics and people development in large organizations such as Nike, Target, and Google. Over the years, he distilled all that experience in a book that will be published in September 2023, and it’s called “Wrong Fit, Right Fit.” You might wonder what is a “fit” and what does a wrong one look like? What does the right one look like, and how do we achieve it? Listen to our conversation.

If I had to summarize the book in only one word, it would be authenticity.

People need to be authentic about what they want and value. Companies need to be authentic about who they are and what they do and value. The right fit is great, but the wrong fit is nobody’s “fault.” Thinking about fit instead of labeling bad personal or corporate traits changes everything.
