Steve Yegge is an industry veteran and the co-author of the recently published book Vibe Coding. Many of you will remember Steve’s rant about Google platforms that I linked in one of my ancient 0800-DEVOPS newsletters. That rant is now 14 years old, but people still talk about it.

I was a bit skeptical when I heard about the book, but reading it completely changed my mind. Not knowing what was in the book, I assumed the authors would glorify AI code generation, but they did something else. They took a very realistic stance toward AI. They acknowledged its current flaws and offered practices to tame it and make the most of it. They described practices to lower the uncertainty when working with AI.
Vibe coding is a concept we cannot ignore anymore. Unfortunately, we got off on the wrong foot by equating it to Russian roulette. It might have been like that back in the days when ChatGPT 3.5 came out with none of the supporting development practices. Today, development practices have co-evolved with tools to the point that Vibe Coding represents a viable family of development practices. We cannot afford to stay on the sidelines. Steve was much more explicit about this during our conversation, giving us 1-2 years of easy life ignoring Vibe Coding.
I have to admit, I did some vibe coding of my own. It was, however, pretty simple: I vibe coded the landing page for my book BizTech Evolution, and it felt amazing. Especially since graphical design, CSS, and carousels were never my thing, but somehow the combination of ChatGPT and Claude managed to solve everything. And it didn’t turn out half bad in the end! Consider me bought 🙂
